Cleveleys, Lancashire, United Kingdom

Cleveleys (with its neighbouring town of Thornton, collectively known as Thornton-Cleveleys) is a coastal town on the Fylde Coast of Lancashire in north-west England. It is situated about four miles north of the larger and brasher town of Blackpool and two miles south of the former fishing port of Fleetwood. The towns of Thornton and Cleveleys combined have a resident population of about 32,000. The town developed in the 19th century around a hotel owned by a Mr. Cleveleys. The town has a more sedate and genteel atmosphere than its cruder neighbour Blackpool. Cleveleys is quite a popular retirement area which is why you see a lot of older people in the town (and probably on the pictures too to some extent).
OK, that’s the potted history lesson over and done with. On to the fun part: the pictures! It was a lovely early May day in Lancashire and I hope that is in evidence in the selection of images I post here for your perusal.
As ever, if anyone would like a full-size copy of a particular picture please leave a comment with your e-mail address enclosed. Thank you.
This is a shot of Cleveleys bus station and B&M Bargains, a discount store just off the Victoria Road, the main street of the town and the one that connects the two towns of Thornton and Cleveleys:

A shot specifically of B&M Bargains. I remember going to Cleveleys as a young boy with my grandma and grandad and the first thing they always said when they got there was “Let’s go t’B&M Bargins!”. In fact, that seemed to be half the reason they went over to Cleveleys in the first place. Maybe they felt at home there. B&M Bargains is basically a crowded bargain-basement supermarket.

The front of Victoria Market in Cleveleys. It’s not particularly notable but I thought I’d better put it here as it’s interesting.

A general street scene on Victoria Road beside Victoria Market.

The Woolworths on Victoria Street. Note the ‘L’ missing from the title of this branch of Woolies!

Some people (mostly women) sitting down at tables and chairs outside a outside a café.

A clock stands behind a map of Cleveleys. If anyone would like a closer view of the map on the right, please let me know.

A traditional Hackney carriage at the traffic lights.

Also at the traffic lights: the regular Blackpool to Fleetwood tram passes along the line. A man man tries to cross the road.

Fancy some fruit? Here’s a selection of fruit and veg outside a greengrocers’.

The top end of Victoria Road. Note the amusement arcades on the left-hand side. They are much more in evidence at this end whereas the middle and bottom parts of the main street are mainly supermarkets, bakeries, butchers and other food shops.

A quick snap of Cleveleys beach and the sea.

And finally: what could be more quintessentially British than watching people playing bowls?

And that’s it! I hope that today’s selection of pictures of the Lancashire seaside town of Cleveleys was thoroughly enjoyed. Comments, as always, would be gratefully received.
